FRI BOARD GAMES

Beyond the Sun

Event #: FRI-BG-1 GM: Joe Hoover
Event Description: Beyond the Sun is a space civilization game in which players collectively decide the technological progress of humankind at the dawn of the Spacefaring Era, while competing against each other to be the leading faction in economic development, science, and galactic influence.

The game is played over a variable number of rounds until a number of game-end achievements are collectively claimed by the players. The winner is the faction with the most victory points, which are obtained by researching technologies, improving their economy, controlling and colonizing systems, and completing various achievements and events throughout the game.

On a turn, a player moves their action pawn to an empty action space, then takes that action. They then conduct their production phase, either producing ore, growing their population, or trading one of those resources for another. Finally, they can claim up to one achievement, if possible.

As players take actions, they research new technologies that come in four levels. Each technology is one of four types (scientific, economic, military, commercial), and higher-level technologies must match one of the types of tech that lead into it. Thus, players create their own technology tree in each game, using these actions to increase their military strength, to jump to different habitable exoplanetary systems, to colonize those systems, to boost their resource production, to develop android tech that allows growth without population, and more.

Lost Ruins of Arnak

Event #: FRI-BG-6 GM: Floyd Resler
Event Description: On an uninhabited island in uncharted seas, explorers have found traces of a great civilization. Now you will lead an expedition to explore the island, find lost artifacts, and face fearsome guardians, all in a quest to learn the island's secrets.

Lost Ruins of Arnak combines deck-building and worker placement in a game of exploration, resource management, and discovery. In addition to traditional deck-builder effects, cards can also be used to place workers, and new worker actions become available as players explore the island. Some of these actions require resources instead of workers, so building a solid resource base will be essential. You are limited to only one action per turn, so make your choice carefully... what action will benefit you most now? And what can you afford to do later... assuming someone else doesn't take the action first!?

DUNE IMPERIUM + RISE OF IX EXPANSION

Event #: FRI-BG-7 GM: Eric Guttag
Event Description: Dune Imperium is a game themed in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe which requires combines deck building and worker placement. Players pick a leader from one of the Great Houses that has unique abilities. Starting with 10-card deck, each player during the Agent Phase takes turns by playing their cards and then placing their Agents is those spaces to acquire resources (Water, Spice, or Solari) and Intrigue cards. At the end of the Agent Phase, players Reveal their remaining unplayed cards to gain additional cards from the Imperium Row to build their deck. In the Combat Phase, players resolve who wins the current Conflict card based upon their combat strength and what rewards they will receive. The first player to reach 10 VPs triggers the endgame but is not necessarily the winner as endgame Intrigue cards may be played to add to VP totals.

The Rise of IX expansion encompasses more of the Dune universe (including new cards and leaders), as well as adding a new CHOAM board overlay which modifies part of the existing board to include a Shipping Track, along with a new IX board by which tech tiles may be acquired. Players may also acquire new and more powerful Dreadnaughts for the Combat phase. FOR EXPERIENCED PLAYERS OF DUNE IMPERIUM (AT LEAST 3 PRIOR GAMES WITH BASE GAME AND/OR RISE OF IX EXPANSION, KNOWLEDGE OF BASE GAME, PLUS EXPANSION RULES IS EXPECTED).

FRI CARD GAMES

EMINENT DOMAIN

Event #: FRI-CG-1 GM: Eric Guttag
Event Description: Eminent Domain is a sci-fi themed deck-building game where players grow their space empire by conquering/settling planets and crafting their deck to gain victory. During each turn, players may execute an optional “action” by playing of a card from their hand. In addition, players must then select and execute one Role card from one of five different stacks in the central card display: (1) Survey cards to add new planets; (2) Warfare cards to gain warships and conqueror new planets; (3) Colonize cards to settle new planets; (4) combined Produce/Trade cards to either produce goods or trade produced goods for Influence tokens (aka, Victory tokens); and (5) Research to gain technology cards providing special benefits and bonuses to their space empire. Players may “boost” with other cards in their hand and/or planets that have the same icon as the selected Role card. But opposing players may also “follow” with cards and/or planets in their hands/empires that have the same icon (or may “dissent” and draw a card from their draw pile)! When a certain number of card stacks are exhausted in the central display or all 24 Influence tokens have been taken, the game ends. Whoever has the most combined Influence (from tokens, planets, and/or technology cards) is the winner. BEGINNERS AND EXPERIENCED PLAYERS ARE WELCOME!

The gameplay is fast and exciting. With all the potential for twists and comebacks, you'll never truly feel out of the game.

Networld Protocol (Learn to Play)

Event #: FRI-CG-3 GM: Christopher Menart
Event Description: Networld Protocol (2 players, 60 minutes), integrates the tactical richness of Chess and Shogi into an expandable card game like no other.

Like other expandable card games, Networld will see you playing from a themed or customized deck of your own choosing. Summon allies to control the battlefield and support them with Commands that warp the fabric of the virtual world!

Unlike other expandable card games, the strength of your forces is not determined by a set of numbers. Every piece you summon moves, attacks, and scores in its own unique pattern. No two pieces play off each other in the same way, and no two games are the same!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

While Networld is a somewhat heavy game, no prior knowledge is required--everyone will be taught how to play using themed preconstructed decks. We can even play if only 1 player is present (in which case the GM will be your opponent).

Networld is a game in development; be aware you are playing a prototype whose components are not final.

This event only takes about 1 hour; no tickets are required, and walk-ins are welcome! I will be hanging out at the demo table throughout the time periods listed for this event.

If you would like to check availability or try to "reserve" a time when you know you'd like to come play, please email irreducibleboardgames@gmail.com, which I will try to keep tabs on before and during the convention.
